Convert X to DVD - Download ConvertX to DVD

This tutorial will show the process for converting a typical 2 x 700mb AVI movie into DVD format, adding subtitles and customising the menu using just Convert X to DVD.

This tutorial is optimised for a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. If your resolution is set higher than this some of the graphics may appear small. There are a lot of graphics in this tutorial so it may take a little time to load.

This is the opening screen. Click on the green and white button at the top to add video files.

Click on Settings and choose TV Format from the dropdown menu. Make sure this is set for your region. The default settings for everything else will suffice for this tutorial. The defaults include setting burn speed at 4X and always doing a 2 pass encoding for ensuring best possible quality of video and sound.

I have chosen 3:10 To Yuma which comes in 2 parts. I have selected both parts (ctrl A). Click on open.

We can now see that both files have been added and they will take up a total of 2.63Gb on the burned DVD.

I don?t like the menu background, lets change it. Click on the + next to Menu and double click on background. Browse to the required background file.
NOTE: Sequential Playback is ticked. This means the 2 files will play in order without going back to the menu screen. There will be a 1 second pause before the next file starts.

Here is one I made earlier. Backgrounds need to be as simple as possible. The graphic for this background is a 1024 x 768 jpg. Now that I have replaced the background the auto generated menu is visible. The auto generated menu in this case makes no sense so lets change it.

Double click on TITLE and type in desired title.

To change the title of the video on the menu, navigate as shown above and type in desired title. Do this for each video if required.

The finished article. Basically we are done. You could play about with fonts for the text elements of the menu.
When you are done playing with the text elements click on CONVERT and wait until it is finished

SUBTITLES

To add subtitles is just a few clicks if you already have the files. To find subtitles for movies look no further than subscene http://subscene.com/ they have a huge database.

The above graphic shows that subtitles have already been put in for each video element. This was achieved automatically just by putting the sub files in the same folder as the video files, making sure that the filenames for each video and matching subtitle file match exactly. More subtitle details can be found here http://www.vso-software.fr/faq/add_subtitles_to_dvd/add_subtitles_to_dvd.php

Big Thanks to Molly for helping

One thing that was brought to my attention was the Encoding tab under Settings ==> Target Size, was told to set it to custom and set it to 4300MB as this will lesson the scratches on the outer regions on the disk (ie. from griping the disk with normal useage).

Wow. I was thinking about tinkering with this prog and I was hesitant to do so on the basis of the technicalities and admittedly, I have not used it before. This makes it so my n00b-ish self can use it now and I surely will.
- question though, what is enabled/disabled between the trial and full versions Huh
and also, is it possible take full advantage of the 4.7GB single side and add more movie with independant menus? i.e. Say I want 3:10 to Yuma AND Equilibrium which both have CD1 and CD2. Can I burn both, with menus for each and subtitles? Or is it just one main menu I can select either from?
Any help would be nice, so I don't waste DVD-RW's  Undecided
p.s. excellent tutorial.

I have had ver 2 and ver 3.   I went back to 2 because it is very user friendly.   You can put more than one movie on a 4.7 disk but I think the quality is better with just the one.  You can put CD1 and CD2 on the way it shows in the tutorial but I usually use Boilsoft avi joiner that is so easy, just takes a few secs.
Most people have had very good luck with Convertx,

Ok. Thanks Molly. So does Avi joiner do just that and make CD1 + CD2 = DVD1 ; )
Would I then use avi joiner to do that, then burn with ConvertX?
I also have Nero Showtime and it does something similar with SVCDS, etc. Any advice on that?

Yes, you can join the two of them with the joiner and if it is two 700MB avi's, it will end up as a 1400 MB OR 1.4GB......
Then you just add it to convertx and convert.....
You can also put your own wallpaper eg 310 to Yuma on as your cover instead of the default ones.

You can also use your own custom wallpaper with the Nero.  It shows how in the tute.    good luck

Ok. Thanks Molly. I guess I will try both and see which gives me results closest to what I am looking for with my little project here...
But also on the side note of that, I guess ConvertX is going to be my choice when I go to burn DvDrips. I like the custom wallpaper aspect, nice touch!

Just got a new computer with Vista 64-bit OS. Is Convert X to DVD compatible?

Yes.

Always get the current version.

Edit:
The suggestion for people that are umm beginners should stick to version 2.
Intermediate users should always keep up to date with the newer version.
This optimizes user experience and keeps bugs and crashes to a minimal.

The latest version of Convert X to DVD (Version: 3.1.2) fixed a lot of the bugs that put people of version 3.0. The main improvement was to a way of looking at the menu you just created before you burned the DVD.

that is good to know 407370.  I was on ver 3 and went back to two because I couldn't view the finished look before converting.  Now you say in ver 3 you can view it before.   Back to 3 I go.........
